California Straw Building Association
is:
a Straw Think Tank,
a Trade Support Organization,
an Open Source Incubator,
and a Community of Practice.
We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization committed to building with straw. Our members are people interested in and/or dedicated to straw building - including owner-builders, architects, engineers, and contractors.
Why Straw?
Because the built environment is in a polycrisis and straw is a polysolution
As a building material, straw is:
- Biodegradable & nontoxic
- Carbon-storing
- Annually renewable
- By-product of grain production (efficient land use)
- Sourcing can support regenerative land management
- Good insulation
- Accessible to non-traditional builders
- Local/bioregional supply chains
